How can women help each other in business?
Women can help each other by supporting, encouraging, and building each other up. In teaching, there is always sharing of ideas and activities that helps to enrich classrooms. Also, they help each other by providing appropriately timed chocolate, caffeine, hugs, and space. Women  just have a way of knowing the signs.

What are you passionate about?
This question always stressed me out because I never felt like I had a passion. But then I had to answer it on the fly during an interview, and I was surprised at how accurate the answer felt: people. Everyone has something to share, teach, or learn from someone else. We’re all stumbling around together and everyone has a different experience. I love to hear all the stories.

How do you “live your values?”
I like to say that my teaching philosophy is to help my kids be at least a little bit better than I am. I teach them to respect and care for other people, because everyone is important, just like they are. I try and help them to realize that even though they are tiny, little half-humans in the making, they can make a difference and be helpers in their community and that they have value.

What can’t you stop talking about?
Besides my current Netflix obsession? (It’s Shameless, btw) In preschool, our main topic of conversation is kindness. “Is that a kind choice?” “Was that a kind thing to say?” “Please be kind to your friends!” Aside from “potty,” I’m sure that “kind” is my top-spoken word throughout my day. But, seriously, you should watch Shameless!

What would be impossible for you to give up?
It would be dangerous and reckless for me to give up caffeine in my line of work. But my less-standard answer would probably be making people laugh. I think that my humor is my greatest gift that I can share with others and there’s no way I could give up being a sarcastic smart ass.

How do you want to be remembered?
Again, my sense of humor is one of my strongest personality traits. But I want people to think of me as a kind (there’s that word again!), caring, thoughtful friend. Being a good friend is really important to me.

What inspires you in your business?
My coworkers inspire me with their creativity and enthusiasm. But seeing a kid be super stoked about an activity, book, or anything that I’ve had a part in creating is the biggest inspiration. Also, anytime a kiddo is polite or thoughtful, which is very often, the pride I feel that maybe I had a small part in helping encourage that, inspires me to keep doing what I’m doing.

Name a time that you felt you were incredibly brave?
I recently relocated from Missoula to Seattle. Though I was really excited and luckily found a great job and house right away, it did take a lot to leave my comfortable job, friends, and home I’d created to wonder off into a situation with unknown outcomes. So far, so good though!

How do you accomplish goals?
Usually with a lot of procrastination and caffeine. Setting and accomplishing goals has been a struggle for me, but thinking about the positive changes that will come from accomplishing a goal is pretty big motivation for me.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give the child version of yourself?
Stop thinking about what other people will think about you if you fail! Try it anyway! Your life will be better if you are brave and step out of your comfort zone. Also, you might not fail, but it’s ok if you do. And don’t quit skateboarding! I think we would really like that!
