City of Missoula: Compliance Officer
How can women help each other in business?
Inspire women to believe in themselves. Share their passions and talents with the world. Hold other women in your heart and build on their strengths, which are all different from each other but equally valuable. I find so often that women feel the need to compete against each other but the real talent is to consider other women’s gjfts and how they can compliment our own.
What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about compassion. There are so many rough edges in the world and as women we are often encouraged to compress our feelings, goals and passions and to stifle ourselves to fit in. I think when we have compassion and empathy towards others and work to build success for all those around us, we learn to develop as a team and have compassion for this world and the empathy to ensure that not one person remains unlifted or left passed by.
How do you “live your values?”
My values are family. I try to spend as much time with my grandchildren, children, family and friends as I’m allowed. We can be passionate about our work but it is our family that needs our time the most. I’ve lost some really key people in my life to death and each time I suffered those losses my only wish was that we’d had more time. I never want to have that regret. I believe in living in the here and now.
What can’t you stop talking about?
My grandbabies and children. Wow, it’s the most amazing experience to be a mother and then as you get older and begin to have grandchildren, to get to experience that through the eyes of your children. It’s mind boggling. We have so much empowerment at our hands to be a part of these precious lives and sometimes I am in awe of how special my time with them is.
What would be impossible for you to give up?
Ha! Family, Friends, Coffee. Pepsi. But seriously, I’m passionate. It’s something I’ve always been. People are often mind blown by the level in which I commit my time to things I believe in, but I don’t think there’s anything better in life than that feeling that you’ve contributed your all to something and you get to see the amazing finale of that. I believe we get what we give in this life.
How do you want to be remembered?
I want people to say she was kind, compassionate, a lover of her family and friends and if there was a way to help someone in this world, she would have done everything possible to do that.
What inspires you in your business?
The people I meet and work with. We have an amazing team and even though we often have to make really hard decisions for the health and safety of Missoula, I am grateful for the support of our City team and all they’ve done for me.
Name a time that you felt you were incredibly brave?
I held my mother’s hand as she died from cancer. It was one of my most difficult and bravest moments of my life. I was her power of attorney over her medical care and I remember her last days and the very tough decisions I had to make to protect my mother and ensure her wishes were protected. My sister’s and I became a team for my mother and cared for her until the end. It was the hardest thing and yet the best thing we could ever do. There were no regrets at the end only a lifetime of memories to remember of our incredibly brave mother
How do you accomplish goals?
One day at a time. I am a firm believer that if we love what we do, we do it well. Sometimes we need to set priorities and meet deadlines to get that achieved.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give the child version of yourself?
Live life happy. If you find a job you love you’ll succeed at anything. Eat that chocolate cake, let your house be messy and snuggle with those babies. Dream more, never let anyone tell you that you can’t, show them you can!!
